The bulette is a Large, or Huge, burrowing land shark (not to be confused with the beer) that has a documented mating ritual. That being said, there are rumors that at least one bulette has mated outside of their own kind, albeit with a scion of a demonic goddess. They have an Intelligence of a 2 so they’ll fall into the “can’t give consent” rule.
The earth is a churned up pit of sod and bones. Idly, you identify femurs and mandibles. Sometimes you can still determine species of the remains: kobolds, boars, and elk. Most often, you’re left guessing as you study this morbid nest. You pace, hoping the bulette who constructed this nest will feel your footsteps through the earth and assume you’re a potential mate. If you can tame this creature, you’ll have pulled off something only those blessed by the gods can do. The earth begins to quake and sink as massive amounts of dirt and bones are shifted from under your feet. The blue armored head that launches upward has a massive yawning mouth.
Make a DC 15 Performance Check to see if the PC can make the bulette feel the motion of the ocean.
On a success: The bulette lunges towards you on short, surprisingly agile legs. She’s more beautiful than you would have thought for a creature that hides in the dirt. The blue grey of her natural armor shed dust and pebbles easily, leaving behind an attractive sheen. The bulette sniffs you, curious about the mate that has taken up residence in this bony nest. You reach up to stroke the creature’s thick plates when the ground beneath you shifts.
A larger, green tinged bulette erupts from the earth, a long broken bone held in his mouth. He immediately identifies you as an intruder just as you realize this may be the nest builder. Tossing his bone aside, the bulette leaps at you.
Initiate combat with the male bulette using its Leap attack in a surprise round. The female joins combat to fight alongside the male against the PC.
On a fail: The bulette lunges towards you on short, surprisingly agile legs. She does not pause to inspect you as a potential mate, though. At least, you do not believe bulettes show such aggressive posturing towards potential mates. Perhaps there’s a reason you can only think of one successful pairing of a bulette and another species.
She leaps at you just as you start to back up towards the edge of the pit.
Initiate combat with the female bulette using its Leap attack in a surprise round. Add the male bulette to combat after 1d4 rounds.
